Irresponsible watercraft users could jeopardize potential rescue efforts from the emergency services by blocking slipways access, it has been claimed.
During the summer months the number of water users swell with large amounts of pleasure boats, jets-skis and dinghies using almost all of the 150 piers and slipways dotted around the Donegal coast line.
Vincent Lynn, Divisional manager for Marine
in Donegal County Council says people are continually blocking access to slip ways and piers, which could lead to lives being put at risk.
Mr Lynn also highlighted the indiscriminate use of jetskis causing anxiety, and at times, poses serious risks to bathers and small boats using the water.
He said he would encourage everyone to have consideration for other bathers and pleasure craft users, particularly at the what is typically the busiest time of the year.
“Some people don’t think when they park up near a pier or slipway. They leave the car at some place it shouldn’t be left and it causes an obstruction and when they come back in a hour they don’t really mean to have caused an obstruction, so just a wee bit of thought is all were asking for,” Vincent said.
He also highlighted that small percentage of jetski users cause unnecessary concern and “anxiety”, particularly to swimmers and bathers.
“It is the same with these jetskis, just have bit of thought. You can see some people going mad and many others of those on jetskis who do everything responsibly and there are the clowns that want to cause fear and when people see them their hearts are in their mouths. It’s the minority that cause the problems and it just thoughtlessness,” Vincent added.
There are currently 150 piers and slipways within control of County Council.
