Prominent Liverpool fan and Donegal North East T.D. Joe McHugh has sent out an SOS on behalf of Manchester United and Chelsea fans, who are struggling to get a visa before next week's Champions' League final in Moscow.
The Fine Gael deputy brought the issue before the house during order of business, which was taken for the first time by newly appointed Tanaiste, Mary Coughlan. McHugh urged the Tanaiste to put pressure on her colleague Michael Martin, the new Foreign Affairs minister to resolve the issue.
Irish fans were informed earlier this week that a waiver would be in place for those travelling to the match, but it is now apparent that this is not the case. The ambiguity surrounding the issue is fuelled by the fact that UK residents can avail of a waiver by simply turning up at the airport with a valid match ticket. However, Irish fans must travel to Dublin to get a visa, which will cost in the region of €100.
Deputy McHugh, who wished Minister Coughlan all the best in her new portfolio, told the house that there were hundreds of fans throughout Ireland who were in the dark over this issue.
"Man United and Chelsea fans throughout the country are hoping to travel to Moscow next Wednesday but they are getting mixed information. They are being told different things by different people and we need to clarify the issue for these fans. I would urge the Tanaiste to consult with the new Minister for Foreign Affairs in order to secure a waiver for Irish supporters."
Minister Coughlan assured Deputy McHugh that she would consult with the cabinet to try to resolve the matter, which is affecting quite a number of people, especially in the Donegal area.
Deputy McHugh says that he was hopeful of a resolution before next week's game and that supporters of both clubs would be able to enjoy the game in Russia. However the deputy refused to disclose who he would be supporting during next Wednesday's big game.
