Moville has been named as one of a number of coastal towns which has untreated sewage flowing out to their seas, the Journal has learnt.
A report published by the Environmental Protection Agency this week names the Inishowen town as one of the 112 locations across the country where waste water was being discharged with either no treatment or basic treatment at the end of 2007.
As o
f June 2009 93 of these locations, including Moville, remain without treatment or with just basic treatment.
In the majority of the cases these discharges are to estuarine or coastal waters.
EPA officer Gerard O’Leary says untreated sewerage is a problem all over the country.
He said: “Continued investment in waste water treatment is required as well as a dramatic improvement by local authorities in the operation and monitoring of existing waste water treatment infrastructure.”
The latest report also finds that over half of waste water plants do not meet EU standards and 40 per cent of treatment plants either don’t use the facilities available to them or fail to conduct enough testing to make their results valid.
The news comes in a week when An Bord Pleanala held a two day oral hearing at the Carlton Redcastle Hotel this week over the proposed Moville Greencastle Sewerage scheme’s controversial treatment plant at Carnagarve.
