Planned N13 works 'a waste of money' - Conaghan says

Spending e100,000 this year on a section of the N13 would be 'a waste of money' an Inishowen councillor insisted this week.
Colr Francis Conaghan told members of Donegal county council's Inishowen electoral area committee on Monday that "simply laying down new tar past the dangerous junctions and around the bad bends" on the road between Newtowncunningham and Drumbarnett/Veagh is not enough.
Eamonn Boyle of the Donegal National Roads Design Office informed council members at their meeting Monday morning in Carndonagh that the NRA had allocated e100,000 for "design and overlay and construction" of the 4.4km section of road. However, he confirmed that the planned works would only involve pavement strengthening and road lining, not any major realignments or junction works.
Colr Conaghan said it would not be enough and the real problems needed to be dealt with immediately.
"The public is fed up listening to what's going to happen in the future. There's a seriously dangerous junction at Kernans, which affects Colmcille NS, the playschool and the playing fields . There's another dangerous junction at Moyle, which affects pupils at Moyle NS. And there are a series of bad bends on that section of road. Unless we're prepared to tackle them, we're wasting money."
He added that, at the main junction, nothing less than a roundabout would be acceptable.
"There's a broad consensus in the local community that a roundabout is needed. Don't come along at end of year and say a roundabout is off the agenda. Get the dialogue started now."
He asked for an urgent meeting with the design team to discuss addressing this problems.
Colr Conaghan also asked that officials liaise with their counterparts in the North to determine the proposed route of the Derry to Letterkenny 'gateway' and what implications that might have for the future of the N13.
