Animal rights activists last night began a series of peaceful protests outside the Circus Sydney at Drumahoe.
The group who are part of the Animal Rights Action Network held placards reading 'Stop Circus Suffering' and carried posters of a caged tiger with the tagline 'Please Help Me, Boycott The Circus.'

They said they are spotlighting growing concern for the welfare of animals in travelling circuses.

However circus owner Yvette Scholl last night told the 'Journal' she had nothing to hide.

"The protestors came out last year when we were on Buncrana Road. We have no problem with them expressing their opinion.

"We don't treat our animals badly so we don't feel bad.

"In Circus Sydney, our animals are like part of the family. They are well treated."

She said that protestors could have their say as long as they did not force their opinion on those attending the circus.

"The people who come to the circus don't want this forced on them," she said.

The protestors will be out on Saturday and Sunday at 2.30pm and 5.30pm. They will also protest from Monday to Friday at 7pm and the following weekend on Saturday and Sunday at 2.30pm and 5.30pm.

I completely agree with the protestors on this one - fair play for getting out there and trying to force change. For a long time I have refused to visit or permit my family to visit a circus that uses animals for entertainment. There is no place in today's society for the use of animals for people's entertainment and I am well informed about the abuse that circus animals suffer throughout their lives in this environment. The conditions and treatment of animals in this way is completely unnatural, cruel and degrading. It should no longer be permitted and I urge owners of land sought by circuses in towns and cities throughout Northern Ireland to set an example by considering this aspect when authorising use of land for this purpose. It is easy to say that people visiting the cicus do not want this forced upon them; the simple fact is many people who do so are not even aware of what really goes on in circuses and how miserable and dejected animals who are forced to be a part of them become.
It's time that this element of entertainment became a part of history once and for all.
