Speculation that a supermarket in Strabane could start selling coffins has been laid to rest.
Asda yesterday told the 'Journal' it has no plans "to follow in the wake" of a move by its US parent company Wal-Mart who last week announced it was to begin selling caskets to its customers.
In a move to hold onto customers even after they die, Wal-Mart are allowing customers to pay for their range of coffins - including a "Mom" or "Dad Remembered" steel coffin for $895 and a sienna bronze casket for $2,899 - over a 12 month period.
But Asda yesterday sounded the death knell on any plans to introduce the caskets to its stores this side of the Atlantic, including in Strabane.
Speaking to the 'Journal' an Asda spokeswoman drove the final nail into the mounting speculation.
"There are no plans to introduce the sale of coffins into any of our stores," she said.
"It is very doubtful we will follow in their wake."
The coffins are now available to online customers in the US.
