The Deputy Mayor of Derry councillor Patricia Logue has said residents of the Bogside are angry after a car was burned close to an area were children were playing on Sunday evening.
A car parked outside a garage on Elmwood Road was set alight at around 9pm on Sunday. The blaze caused smoke damage to a nearby house before it was put out by the fire and rescue service.

Colr. Logue praised the quick response of the firefighters and said the local community were left very angry about the incident.

"I would like to pay tribute to the Fire Service for extinguishing this fire so quickly, had this fire spread to adjacent homes on Tryconnell and Cable Streets the consequences could have been very serious. I have spoken to a number of local residents and they are very angry and upset about this incident as it took place while a lot of children were playing in the street," she said.

The Sinn Féin councillor said such incidents were becoming all too common and she called on those responsible to think about the consequences.

"The current spate of cars getting set on fire in various parts of Derry at the weekends has to stop, it's causing nothing but heartache and financial hardship for the car owners and is doing untold damage to the image of our city "

"Those behind setting this car on fire have only succeeded in terrorising their own community by inflicting inconveniences upon them. I would call on them to desist immediately from any activity that is inflicting hurt upon the local communities," she added.
