Police are hunting a pervert who exposed himself to a young female foreign student in the city yesterday - the second time in 12 months that a flasher has targeted visiting students.
The 22-year-old, who hails from Eastern Europe, was walking on her own along Duncreggan Road shortly before 9 a.m. when she was approached by the man.
The terrified woman told the 'Journal' last night: "As I walked along the road, I saw this man looking at me. Then he flashed. He said nothing and I just looked at him and walked past him."
The young woman, who has been in Derry for the past two months, says that, while she was "badly shaken" by the incident, it won't spoil the rest of her time in the city.
"However, I would advise women to avoid walking alone where possible," she said.
The man is described as being in his early 20s, dark skinned, 5ft 11ins tall and of a medium build. He was wearing a dirty blue anorak with the hood up and dark trousers.
Helena Bracken, of the Nexus Institute, which counsels victims of sex attacks, says the young woman was terrified.
"This guy came round the corner, was checking round him to make sure no-one was there and then opened his coat and exposed himself to her," she said.
Ms. Bracken says Nexus has counselled numerous victims of flashers.
"The victims are normally vulnerable people or elderly people.
Sometimes it can get so bad that people are afraid to leave their homes. Indecent exposure is abusive and has a damaging impact on those it happens to. I would advise women out walking to stick to busy roads. We want women in the city to be aware this has happened."
Police at Strand Road are asking anyone with information about the incident to call them on 0845 600 8000, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
