An 18-years-old man from Lislane Drive in the Creggan area of the city was yesterday sentenced to 200 hours community service and ordered to pay a police officer he'd admitted assaulting compensation of £200.
Gavin Fisher, unemployed, pleaded guilty at the local Magistrate's Court to assaulting the police officer on November 18 last.

He also admitted further charges of disorderly behaviour and resisting arrest on June 12 last.

District Judge Barney
McElholm was told the June 12 offences occurred at 2.55 a.m. after police had observed Fisher fighting with another man outside a bar in Shipquay Street.

"He was observed assaulting another male so the police intervened", the prosecution solicitor said.

"He was arrested but then ran off towards Rossville Street. He said he did that because he was due in court the following Monday. While in the same street outside the River Inn last November the defendant was also aggressive towards the police.

He tried to run away but was caught. While he was being taken into a police land rover, he kicked out at a police officer causing him bruises to the legs", the solicitor said.

Defence solicitor George Copeland said both incidents were drink related.

"His mother is worried about him. She is here in court and is trying to get him back on the straight and narrow", he said.

As well as the Community Service Order and compensation order, the District Judge also gave Fisher a conditional discharge for two years on the disorderly behaviour and resisting arrest offences.
