A Derry clergyman who served with the Territorial Army in Afghanistan has criticised stand up comedian, Jimmy Carr for a joke about ex-servicemen amputees.
The comic has been criticised in sections of the press after he told an audience at the Manchester Apollo: "Say what you like about servicemen amputees from Iraq and Afghanistan, but we're going to have a *****g good paralympic team in 2012."
Rev. David Latimer of First Presebyterian Church, who served with the TA 204 Field Hospital in Helmand Province, described the joke as "inappropriate, hurtful and unnecessary."
The minister in one interview said: "I witnessed people having limbs amputated and bodies altered by the removal of major organs and would not look favourably on this."
"Those people were doing a job and by doing that job courageously they have come home with very serious injuries."
