Recent research undertaken by Virgin Media reveals that a new breed of business-savvy teenagers are surfing their way to success.
Of the Derry teenagers surveyed, 22% are running their own online businesses from their bedrooms, with more than one in ten (15%) earning in excess of £23.00 an hour - many times the minimum wage.
As well as this, almost half of young people in D
erry (43%) have made money using the internet in the last twelve months by taking advantage of sites such as eBay and Amazon, setting up their own online store or creating forums or blogs, reaping the profits from sponsors and advertisers.
In response to Derry's teenage tycoons and those identified elsewhere in the survey, the largest residential broadband provider is launching Virgin Media Sparks, a competition for local business-headed youngsters to pitch their best online business idea. It is joining forces with The Bright Ideas Trust to give one budding entrepreneur the change to win £1,000 towards setting up their venture plus a business mentor, laptop and the chance of a lifetime meeting with top business guru and winner of BBC's The Apprentice, Tim Campbell.
Tim Campbell said: "I'm delighted to be partnering up with Virgin Media Sparks to celebrate the ingenuity and creativity of today's teens. As the first winner of The Apprentice and founder of The Bright Ideas Trust, it's great to see young people showing an interest in business and using their time wisely to develop their skills and ideas."
