Alliance leader David Ford has apologised to the Bloody Sunday families for describing the Saville Inquiry as " pointless."
Mr Ford, tipped to be the North's first Minister for Justice, met with some of the families at a meeting in Derry last night (Thursday).
He said the comment, made in an email last November, was " clumsy and inappropriate."
"It's clear in that email I used a clumsy and inappropriate phrase which caused significant offence," he said.
"I have told the families that I regret I caused offence."
Some families declined to meet with Mr Ford.
