A mural honouring Nobel Laureate John Hume has been attacked by paint-bombers just days after it was unveiled in the Bogside.
The mural, which was painted by the internationally-acclaimed Bogside Artists, was unveiled last week by the retired Bishop of Derry, Dr Edward Daly.

It also features former South African president and ANC leader Nelson Mandela, American civil rights founder Martin Luther King, and Mother Teresa.

Condemning the attack on the mural, Bogside SDLP councillor John Tierney, who attended last week's unveiling, said: "It is shameful for anyone to attack this mural in such an act of wanton vandalism.

"The small minority who are all too often responsible for carrying out this type of attack do not represent the wider community."

At last week's unveiling, John Hume said he was "deeply honoured" that the Bogside Artists chose to feature him in the mural alongside such famous international figures.

Why are there people with such sick minds to stoop so low do such vandalism what sort of amimals are they surely some one must know who they are.A lot of parents are to blame they have no control over their children or maybe it was not chilren but some vandals who did nothing useful in their lives but cause havoc no matter where they are . Society is far to soft with them if they are caught the cat of nine tails is the only punishment that they would understand.

I for one find this mural to be offensive and would like to see it removed. Why you might ask? Because it depicts someone who was the enemy or free thinking people the world over, especially women - Mother Teresa.

Mother Teresa was a conservative Catholic who supported the Pope's hard line on abortion, contraception and divorce. She spent the latter part of her life as a professional campaigner on those issues. To her a woman's highest virtue was to do her duty to the church and her husband – to be a 'good' wife and mother and to serve the Catholic church.

Indeed she brought her backward beliefs to Ireland to campaign against divorce in the referendum here.

To depict this woman hating witch on the walls of the Bogside is an affront to the forward thinking woman of this area. The best thing that could happen would be for the woman of the area to paint her out of the picture.

Backward beliefs? Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel peace prize in 1979, initially she didn't want ant recognition but on the Popes advice she accepted it. In 1982 she rescued 40 kids from certain death after brokering a ceasefire between the Israeli army and Palestinians. The missionaries of charity, founded by mother teresa have over 600 missions in 100 countries and will assist everyone, regarless of their political or religious beliefs. The charities help those who suffer from HIV/AIDS, orphans. Those with leprosy and TB. You brand one of the greatest people of our time as a woman hating witch, because she is pro family and anti abortion. She was deeply loving, spiritual and non-judgemental, an inspiration to all. perhaps you should read, Mother Teresa: Come be My Light - you will then fully understand her motiviation and perhaps then you could post a more realistic comment on a woman whom you currently know nothing about.
