The Derry-based chief executive of the Federation of the Retail Licensed Trade is to step down after nine months in the post.
In an e-mail to friends and colleagues, Stephen Kelly said he had thoroughly enjoyed his time at the helm of the drinks trade organisation, but was departing because of a job offer he couldn't refuse.

The Derry man also said he would remain a 'com
mitted supporter and keen consumer.'

He said: "I've often enviously listened as friends and colleagues told tales of offers they couldn't refuse and now it is my turn. Despite being with the Federation for nine months, I've accepted an approach to be managing director for the UK and Ireland of Spirit Marketing Group.

"Spirit are leaders in marketing retail developments, shopping centres, town and city centres and regeneration projects. In Northern Ireland this includes the three biggest shopping centres – Foyleside, Rushmere and the recently opened Victoria Square.

"They also have the responsibility for launching and marketing Liverpool One which opens later this month as well as a raft of other projects throughout Ireland and Britain currently operating or in construction.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the Federation and in particular working with the executive, officers, staff and partners. The work we do is important and, despite the clamour to condemn the industry, I believe that the trade is a responsible and critical part of the economy and of vibrant communities."

Mr Kelly will take up his new post on June 2.
