A Dungiven man who wanted to watch Match of the Day in his local GAA club instead of Eoghan Quigg in the X Factor final has been told he should listen to the teen's "latest tape" as part of his punishment.
Colm Kelly, (27), of Hass Road, Dungiven, was in St Canice's GAA club where the live final of X Factor was being televised on October 18 last year.
Limavady Magistrate's Court heard yesterday that Kelly was not an Eoghan Quigg fan and wanted to watch a soccer match. When he was told this wasn't possible he assaulted a man at the club which was "very busy" on the night with supporters of the local pop star.
The court heard that the injured party was punched and kicked and sustained extensive bruising.
Defence solicitor Paddy McGurk said Kelly's temper took over and "it is not behaviour he would by and large get involved in. That's not him, he's a hard working young man, it was out of character for him, the solicitor added.
District Judge Eamon King said he accepted it was out of character for Kelly but "nonetheless it was abominable".
"Maybe he should listen to Eoghan Quigg's latest tape as part of his punishment," the judge said.
Kelly was fined £350 for assault and disorderly behaviour.
