Thanks to the charity and generosity of people throughout the North West, including the proceeds of a recent charity football match in the Creggan, a tiny Indian orphan has been given back the gift of sight.
Donations made to Eamon Melaugh’s charity, Action With Effect, have paid for life-changing surgery for little Premwati, who at only six-years-old was in danger of going blind.
Premwati underwent the surgery on Saturday, July 26, with money provide
d by the Derry charity and its founder Eamon Melaugh says the surgery came just in time.
The gruelling six-hour operation took place at G.G.S.I. Eye Research and Cure Centre in New Delhi, India, and Premwati spent ten days in hospital and is now under the care of staff at the Action With Effect orphanage in Dhera Dun.
A letter to Mr Melaugh from his colleagues Peteer and Manoj in India described the operation as a “tremendous news”. The letter adds: “Hearty thankful to Uncle Eamon Melaugh and Action With Effects, Derry, Ireland, who is doing hard job to arrange funds for orphan child Premwati through news channels, we known that it is very, very hard task to arrange funds.”
Mr Melaugh praised the generosity of people throughout the North West: “I’m utterly convinced that I live among the most compassionate people on Planet Earth. Thanks to the kindness of others, a little child has been saved from blindness. We depend almost exclusively on donations and so I thank everyone who helped.”
Since the local charity began, it has raised a staggering £300,000 for the destitute in India and Mr Melaugh is confident that many lives have been saved as a direct result of this generosity. He also pointed out that as little as £5 per month direct debit through AWE can feed an entire destitute family for a month.
