Sean McGinty has been appointed the first lay principal of St Columb's College, the 'Journal' can reveal.
Mr McGinty, who has been a member of the College staff for 36 years and vice-principal for 15 years, will succeed Fr. Eamon Martin who is stepping down from his post at the end of August.

Speaking yesterday, Mr McGinty thanked the Board of Governo
rs at St Columb's for placing their trust in him.

"I am acutely aware of the historical significance of my appointment," he said.

"I would like to pay tribute to the priests who, over so many years, have made such an important contribution to the quality of pastoral care and academic attainment in the College community.

High standards

"I assure the Board of Governors and the entire College community that I shall do my utmost to maintain and develop the high standards of all-round education provided at St Columb's."

Outgoing principal Father Eamon Martin said he wished Mr. McGinty "every blessing in his new role".

"This is an extremely important time for St Columb's and for education in general. I am confident that, under the leadership of Mr McGinty, the distinctive ethos and traditions of the College will continue and develop," he said.
