It has emerged that the 28 year-old man who's in a critical condition after being stabbed in Letterkenny yesterday morning is the son of Frank Shortt.

Kristian Shortt was found lying unconscious in a pool of blood in a Letterkenny apartment by local gardaí at around 7am. It's believed he was stabbed 13 times and suffered two punctured lungs as well as wounds to the head, neck and chest.

He was t
aken to hospital in Letterkenny and was moved by ambulance to St Vincent's Hospital in Dublin early this morning.

Gardaí were called to the apartment off Main Street after receiving a call from a man at 6.45am. The man, in his thirties, was arrested at the scene and questioned at Milford Garda Station. He's been released and a report is being sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

A second man, aged 35, was arrested after crossing the border into Monaghan in the early hours of this morning. He is being questioned at Monaghan Garda station.

In 1997 Frank Shortt was awarded damages of more than €4.5m in the Supreme Court for a wrongful conviction for allowing drugs to be sold at his nightclub at Quigley's Point. Mr Shortt spent three years in jail.

Chief Justice Mr Justice John Murray said Mr Shortt had suffered a tormenting saga of imprisonment, estrangement from family, loss of business, public and professional ignominy and despair.

Kristian Shortt is well-known in the Letterkenny area and it's understood he formerly operated a pizza business there.
