Strabane councillor Ivan Barr dies

Respected Strabane republican and Sinn Fein councillor Ivan Barr died on Friday night after a short illness.

Mr. Barr had been involved in republican politics for years and has been a stalwart on Strabane District Council.

He was a former chairman of the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association and was involved in politics for over 40 years.

He is survived by his wife Judy and seven children in Strabane.
West Tyrone MP Pat Doherty says that there was a profound sense shock, sorrow and loss at the news.

He said: "On behalf of Sinn Féin and in a personal capacity, I would like to extend my sincerest condolences to his Ivan's wife Judy, sons and daughters Jeffery, Judith, Ivan, Ann Marie, Liam, Dean, Seán- brothers Charlie, Tommy and Raymond, grandchildren and wider family circle at this time.
