A Derry call centre firm is believed to have carried out a mass purge of workers who are linked to an email which included banned content.
Management at Stream International have refused to comment on allegations that 76 workers have been dismissed or are facing disciplinary action.

Several workers, who contacted the 'Journal', said that at present 17 staff have been fired by the Ame
rican multinational.

It is understood the email included three middle-aged men involved in a lewd act. Workers say the email may have contained a hidden link to a child porn website which they were unaware of.

One Stream worker, who did not wish to be named, said that 'risque' emails were regularly sent between staff.

"These sort of emails are sent all the time," he said. "It was in no way obvious to anyone who opened or forwarded the email that it contained a link to a child porn site.

"Staff believe this is completely unfair. There is a lot of anger about this on the floor and there have been people in tears. They can't pinpoint where the email came from so they are just getting rid of everyone linked to it. Morale is at an all time low. They wouldn't get away with this if there was a union in here."

The disgruntled worker said that staff felt the company would struggle to replace dismissed workers.

"Everyone knows Stream is having problems getting people to fill positions," he said."The company is finding it difficult to find people who don't speak with a deep Derry brogue."

The Sunday Journal, which broke the story, has an exclusive follow-up on the latest this Sunday.

17 people. That's far too far. And if it was a hidden link, that the original poster was probably not even aware of - then what's the problem? This is absolutely ridiculous. 17 people? Disgrace!
They should hold a protest!

Upon reading the story that was on the front of the journal I think it is an absolute disgrace the way that these people have been treated. From many friend whom shall remain nameless i have heard that the dismissed people were give the opportunity to appeal the decision of the company but to no success. As for the e-mail itself this is not the first time that i have heard of it. This email has reared ts ugly head in many community sites where the story given is that the recipient has been photographed at the weekend. Unaware of the contents the person will click on the link and be subjected to these perverted elderly gentlemen displaying such behaviour that is completely inappropriate. This embarressment is prolonged to the viewer as it cannot be shut down by clicking on the x at the top of the screen, if the viewer attempts to do this the window moves. People should be made aware that this email is not just a problem in stream but is a problem to everyone who has access to the internet.

I think it is obvious that Stream have overreacted in the handling of this situation.
The fact that the link that is being sent about has came from a site that apparently contains child porn does not mean that anyone who received it actually looked at the site.
I would hope that if anyone did know that this was associated with such a site they would have automatically reported it to the Police or the Stream IT Department.

What was sent around between co workers within Stream was just a link. It is impossible for any member of staff in any call centre to access explicit sites, the IT Department would have such sites banned. Anyone attempting to access these sites would be flagged up within IT.

So these people who have family’s, mortgages, rent and bills to pay have had their employment terminated because they sent around "joke" email.
I for one think that it is a bit of an overreaction and a mistake.

As stated in the pervious comment, this link it not just limited to Stream, i myself have received it through my own Hotmail account, it is "doing the rounds" so to speak. This does not make it right in anyway but i feel that Stream should have taken a more lenient approach to the situation instead of shooting from the hip and sacking so many good workers.

I hope this does not end here and Stream actually make a comment about their reasons for sacking so many people in Derry, a place where unemployment is already a massive issue!

(Concerned reader)

Upon reading comment two, I'd just like to point out, from your description, I have also been sent this and I know many others who have been sent this too.

If people are being sacked for just opening the mail then thats unfair....but if people are forwardling the email, regardless of whether they check the links for child porn then its fair. How stupid can you be to forward something like that in work!!
