A court has been told that a trainee police officer from Co. Derry was immediately dismissed from the PSNI after theft and fraud allegations were made against him.
Niall McGregor (24), who is from Limavady, and whose address was given as the PSNI's training college at Garnerville Road in Belfast, appeared before the Magistrate's Court in Derry.
He's charged with twenty-one offences of stealing just over £11,000 from Driver Vehicle Licencing Northern Ireland and of falsifying car tax records.
The offences are alleged to have occurred in the motor tax office at Orchard House in Foyle Street, Derry, between January and June 2006.
At a Preliminary Enquiry, the defendant told Resident Magistrate Rosie Prytherch that he had nothing to say in answer to the twenty-one charges.
A prosecution solicitor submitted that the defendant had a prima facie case to answer and there was no contrary defence submission.
Applying for legal aid, the defendant's solicitor Johnny Sandhu said his client was currently unemployed because "his contract was immediately terminated by the PSNI. This is a breach of trust case which could have serious consequences for my client and it involves a serious amount of money. I understand that computers and records are to be inspected as part of the investigation".
Mr. Sandhu said that not all of the charges his client faced would be proceeded with.
Granting legal aid and a certificate for one defence counsel, the Magistrate remanded the defendant on his own bail of £500 to appear before the city's Crown Court for arraignment on June 5.
