A local dissident republican group has predicted that the Troubles will begin again in Derry as the conditions return for armed conflict.
Members of the 32 County Sovereignty Movement said there's widespread acceptance that support for armed struggle doesn't exist now, but the situation is changing.

"It all started in Derry and it's going to re-start in Derry," said a party spokesman. "We won't have to create the conditions for it - the British and others will do that."

The spokesman, from the new Phil O'Donnell cumann of the 32 CSM in the Shantallow area, said the issues of prisoners, 'interment on remand' and harassment were unifying republicans behind an alternative.

He said members of dissident groupings were coming closer to agreement about a new way forward in republicanism.

"Republicans involved with groups such as 32CSM, the IRSP, the Republican Network for Unity and various other smaller groupings are realising they have much more in common than dividing them," he said. "That's the fear for Sinn Fein. You could see significant movement before the end of the year."

He said anyone looking for evidence should check out those involved in last weekend's 'interment on remand' protest in Derry.

He said many ex-republican prisoners were not yet involved but were leaning towards an alternative to Sinn Fein.

The 32CSM spokesman added that that Sinn Fein members no longer have credibility in dealing with problems with anti-social behaviour.

"I was involved with Sinn Fein in dealing with anti-social behaviour and we were told fifteen years ago we could no longer do anything about it," he said. "If Sinn Fein activists go up to young people in the Bogside they're just told to f*** off. But they'll listen to a 32 CSM activist because we don't talk down to them.

"It's not about going in breaking legs or shooting people, it's about getting involved in a way that people benefit."

The Phil O'Donnell cumann are to open an office shortly at Knockalla Park, operating in the afternoons from Monday to Friday. Party members say it's to deal with growing demand.

The spokesman said there was real concern in local communities about anti-social behaviour.

He said the police couldn't have credibility when they were still trying to recruit informers.

"If there are people shot dead as a result of informing on any organisation, then the responsibility lies with the PSNI," he said.

Why do the 32 County Soverignty form themselves a political party like Sinn Fein and stand for election and then see how the people would cast their votes.

Nottingham Paddy, the results you are looking for are pretty much those that Peggy O'Hara (RSF) got in last year's assembly election: 4.4%, or 1,789 votes.

I guess what the dissidents would have us believe is that support now is a lot more that 4.4%....I guess we'll see. It is interesting that this is one of the first times I can remember where they actually provided a specific timeframe - "You could see significant movement before the end of the year" - for their usual vague comments.

I know! Why don't the 32 County Sovereignty Movement, the People's Front of Judea and the Judean People's Front, and all the others nutters participate in a 40 years war? I mean, come on, look how well the last one went!

Shooting people is a great way to get them to do stuff (well, maybe not the people you actually kill, but everyone else, right?) I mean just look how well it's working in Iraq!

Ireland will never be at peace until Shantallow is free! Then it will be rainbows and roses all the way! And a chicken in every pot! Or something. Yeah.

To visitor.Peggy o hara stood for election as an independent republican and had nothing whatsoever to do with RSF.
"Better to keep your mouth closed and be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt" ( quote also applicable to fastlad )

This is War Mongering at its idiotic best. All you need now is a squad of Paratroopers to come in and shoot dead some Derry folk. Be realistic there are no more soldiers on the streets of Derry, the police service is now 30% Catholic and your war is cowardly shooting Catholic police officers when they are leaving their kids to school. Let us say your FANTASY comes true and you lumber us all with 30 years of slaughter, Check points and Helicopters keeping us up at night, how are you going to convince the Protestant members of this island to accept a unified country. Oh I guess the word Genocide would be your next dream. Why not try and convince them their best interests lay within a United Ireland and have a democratic Vote. The Irish government has started the ball rolling with assisting in the apprentice boys parade.

there very well may not be any soldiers on our streets and no more helicopters or check points but that is only scratching the surface because correct me if im wrong the last time i checked we were still part of the 'united kingdom' and not the United Ireland that we set out to achieve, im not quite sure about elections but did peggy o hara not only stand in 1 ward and could only receive votes from the people in that ward,

Bogside Resident I know we are still part of the UK but my point is that a united Eire will be achieved a lot quicker through non violent means. You do not have to shoot a cop to get there. On another note I believe there will be a conflict within republicanism long before hand and we can see it already. Catholics are being told by some republicans (i.e. Sinn Fien) that it is OK to join the police service and on the other hand we have the very same people being exiled from their towns and shot by other Republicans (i.e Dissidents). How Can you now say that these people who have no interest in Politics and only wish to serve their community be legitimate targets when the main Republican party tells them it is OK to do so?

I am a Derry man born and bred. All I can say is "for Christ sake grow up". I lived through the recent unrest, and does anybody really want to go through that again?

We have to live together, and any resolution in the situation will only be gained by peaceful means. Aggression will only breed aggression.

I always maintained, that I would not return to my home (of Derry) until heads are banged together. I love my City and I am proud of ALL its residents, but until these idiots that are resident amoungst us are expunged then I do not want to know.

For all our sakes reject these extremists. Unification can be gained, but not at the expense of anyones life...
