A mother and her baby daughter were rescued from a house fire in the Waterside on Wednesday night.
Firefighters were called to the house at Ridgeway Drive in Currynierin around 11.30pm on Wednesday after neighbours raised the alarm.
It is believed the fire started after a chip pan which had been left unattended caught fire.
Fire crews arriving at the scene fought the fire and led the mother and her 10-month-old daughter to safety. Both were unhurt.
Assistant group commander, Trevor Ferguson, said: “It was a small fire, a cooker left unattended. There was a child and the child’s mother and they were both removed from the house.
“Thankfully the fire service were alerted by neighbours. It was a quick response by the crews who acted professionally and got the mother and child out.”
He also issued a warning:“This incident highlights the importance of having a smoke alarm. People should make sure their alarms are in working order and have them checked regularly.”
