A treat for fans of the Undead
With an ever-growing fascination with Zombies and the end of the world, and Derry now boasting our own Zombie experts in the form of Uproar Comics and their bestselling comic ‘Zombies Hi’, ‘Talking Dead’ will no doubt be a popular event at 2D.
Next week the annual 2D Northern Ireland Comics Festival will return from May 31-June 2 with a host of amazing events to cater for all ages and tastes. For all fans of the Undead, the ‘Talkin’ Dead’ panel will feature some of the leading Zombie aficionados working in comics today. There’s Charlie Adlard, the amazing artist of ‘the Walking Dead’ comic whose stunning art has helped inspire the TV show adaptation, an international phenomenon which is now going into its third series. There’s Tony Lee, the comic writer of New York Times No.1 bestselling graphic novel adaptation ‘Pride and Prejudice and Zombies’, who has also worked on Dr Who, Sherlock Holmes and Star Trek.
Representing Irish comics publishing we have the local Uproar Comics crew, whose imaginative take on zombie Armageddon involves a very different siege of Derry. The creative team behind Uproar Comics are Danny McLaughlin, Kevin Logue and John Campbell.
The 2D festival has been organised and hosted by the Verbal Arts Centre since 2007 and is an extension of their constant work in celebrating and promote comic book culture. The festival has garnered international acclaim for its unique approach, which involves imaginative programming, accessibility and the lack of any sort of barriers between the guests and festival attendees.
The programming this year explores the theme of ‘digital evolution’ and also features a series of events to celebrate the arrival of the Olympic Torch to the city. The Evening Sessions are for a more mature audience and held in the atmospheric surroundings of the Old Upstairs in Sandinos, a firm local favourite. This is the location for the The Talkin Dead panel, among others, and audience participation is actively encouraged in these lively and engaging sessions.
The fact that Uproar Comics have progressed so far in their debut year that they will share the billing with one of the creators of the world’s most successful and acclaimed horror comic, is testament to their hard work, dedication and talent. They were recently presented with an award for innovation at the Derry Business awards and the fifth issue of their Zombies Hi comic has just been released. They’ll be drawing zombie portraits at the 2D Comics Fair on Saturday, June 2, and their comic series is available at: www.uproarcomics.co.uk
