Plans for a large glazed canopy roof in Derry’s Craft Village have been unveiled.

The Department for Social Development (DSD) and urban regeneration company, Ilex, have announced funding of some £261,000 for the Village Square Project.

Led by the Inner City Trust, the canopy project will cover an area of approximately 200 square metres in the heart of the Craft Village.

The canopy - which will be a permanent structure with an anticipated life of 25 years minimum - will provide a large uninterrupted, multi-purpose space. The space will be provided with power, lighting, heating and sound system allowing daytime, night-time and all year round use.

Helen Quigley, Managing Director of Inner City Trust, said: “The canopy will cover most of the existing square and construction starts next Wednesday, May 2, with a scheduled completion date of the end of June, in time for the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. We would like to assure visitors to the Craft Village that it will still be ‘business as usual’ and any inconvenience will be kept to an absolute minimum.”

Caoimhín Corrigan, Ilex’s Cultural Broker, added: “The Village Square project will enable the Craft Village to host events all year round and will provide the city centre with a unique space which will add value to 2013 and beyond.”

“The Village Square will provide a unique space in the heart of Derry with the character of an open air venue but with the comforts usually only afforded by an indoor space.”
