Bonfires explored in ‘Flames of Passion’

Inspired young people from the Galliagh and Shantallow area last week showcased the world premiere of unique local dance production, ‘Flames of Passion’ - highlighting the ongoing concerns about bonfires.

The dance production, produced by Greater Shantallow Community Arts and supported by the Culture Company’s community funding programme, was performed for the first time during St Brigid’s College’s ‘2013 Culture Connect Variety Show’. The performance won acclaim from all in attendance as well as TV and radio coverage.

Flames of Passion saw international dance chorographers Irena Melly and Bronagh Jackson bring together a cast of local young dancers, film makers and musicians in this visually spectacular portrayal of purposeful inquiry into a burning issues of contention within are local communities.

The project was devised to look at and encourage positive response within the Outer North area when it comes to dealing with the issues of bonfires. In recent times, life for many local residents has been made a nightmare because of bonfires and the Flames of Passion project seeks to allow for expression of all the emotions worries concerns and risks involve with bonfires whist steering the young people involved in the project towards an more creative approach to expression of passions.

The flames of Passion Project examines the effects of our annual, traditional bonfire season and seeks to offer a creative voice to the debate on bonfires and to present our young people with and alternative vehicle for creative expression.
