Buncrana photographer reflects well on Inishowen

A Buncrana photographer’s stunning picture of his friend’s son staring out over Lough Fad near Drumfries has won a prestigious online competition.

Donal Kearney, who was studying photographic techniques at Derry’s Magee University, entered three pictures in the LookWest.ie ‘Fine Things’ competition. His winning snap of young Lachlin Gill also from Buncrana was titled: ‘Reflections of Donegal’.

Speaking to the Journal, Mr Kearney said he heard the good news last week.

He said: “I checked online on Wednesday and discovered that I had won the competition. I was absolutely delighted. All of my friends were pleased as well because I had their heads fried about voting for me on Facebook. I am really looking forward to claiming my prize, a weekend away in Cong, County Mayo.”

Ian Brannigan, Acting CEO of the Western Development Commission (WDC) said when the competition was launched he knew it would capture people’s imagination.

He said: “Nothing better sums up living in the Western Region than a stunning photograph. We were delighted with the response, with over 700 entries and over 2,000 members of the public voting for the shortlisted top 70 photos. Some of the photos submitted were truly spectacular and it can’t have been easy for people to pick their favourite.”

Joanne Grehan, Regional Development Executive at the WDC described Mr Kearney’s photo as ‘fantastic’.

She said: “It represents so much of what is great about the West of Ireland; families enjoying the beauty of this wonderful region. The huge response to the competition shows that people in the West and those with a West of Ireland connection, both at home and abroad, are really proud of their region and want to play an active part in promoting it as an excellent location for enterprise and employment. These photos will help us to showcase the magic that make the Western Region such a great place to live, work and do business.”
