Churchill’s Home Rule Debate - 100 Years On

Winston Churchhill. (409JC2)

Winston Churchhill. (409JC2)

A unique drama commemorating the centenary of Winston Churchill’s historic ‘Home Rule’ speech in Belfast in 1912 will be performed at First Derry Presbyterian Church on Magazine Street this Saturday, September 8.

On 8 February 1912, the Rt. Hon. Winston Churchill MP – here played by well-known Newry actor Peter Ballance - came to Belfast to make a historic and passionately debated speech on the vexed subject of Home Rule for Ireland.

Writer, broadcaster and sports historian Padraig Coyle has reworked that historic speech into a compelling drama entitled Home Rule?, which vividly evokes the political and social climate of the day.

The performance will be preceded by a scene-setting lecture by the distinguished historian and academic Dr. Eamon Phoenix and will be followed by an audience discussion, led by a panel comprised of academics and public figures. Performance begins at 7pm. Admission is free.
