City of Culture Events Pavilion unveiled

This is the indoor venue that will host more than 40 major events during Derry’s year as City of Culture.

A contract to provide the venue for the UK City of Culture year has been signed with Belfast-based firm Extraspace Ltd and the Events Pavilion will be sited at Ebrington.

“I welcome the signing of the contract to provide the much needed large venue for the UK City of Culture,” Social Development minister Nelson McCausland says.

“The drawings demonstrate that my Department will provide a fantastic state of the art facility that will help ensure the success of the UK City of Culture programme.

“This venue will allow the UK City of Culture to deliver an extensive range of programmes and events to all the people of Londonderry and beyond. I look forward to the forthcoming release of the cultural programme with eager anticipation.”

The Main Auditorium is 40m wide, 75m long and, at the highest point, approximately 15m high. The supporting facilities are included in two wings, each 15m wide over almost the entire length of the main pavilion at a maximum height of approximately 6m and is similar in style and construction to the Wembley Arena Pavilion in London.

More than 100,000 people are expected to use the Pavilion during 2013.
