‘First Lady’ for Yanks’ anniversary
Mary Murphy as Eleanor Roosevelt.
The longest serving First Lady of the United States will make a special guest appearance at an historic anniversary ball at The Beech Hill Country House Hotel this weekend.
Local actor and director Mary Murphy will appear as Eleanor Roosevelt and join former marines from the United States and the U.S. Consul General for Northern Ireland at the special evening of dining and music theatre to mark the 70 year anniversary of the US Navy and Marines arrival in Derry.
The ball, which takes places at the Beech Hill tomorrow evening (7.30 p.m.), will be attended by US Consul General Gregory Burton.
Prior to taking up his current position in Belfast, Mr. Burton was the Senior Deputy Coordinating Director for Development and Economic Affairs in the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan.
Tomorrow’s event is the latest in a series of special events being held by The Beech Hill and The Playhouse to mark the momentous anniversary of the United States’ entry into WWII and the US military’s selection of the city as the location for their Base One Europe.
Eleanor Roosevelt was the longest serving First Lady of the United States from 1933 to 1945 and is today celebrated as an international author, speaker, politician, and activist in the US.
“Her appearance at this ball is so very important” Pauline Ross, Founder and Director at The Playhouse said.
“Once the United States entered WWII, she was very active on the homefront, frequently visiting civilian and military centres to boost morale. We’re delighted that Mary Murphy will bring her memory back for former US Navy and Marines.”
Tickets for the Anniversary Marine Ball are priced £25. To book, contact The Beech Hill on Tel: (028) 71 349279.
