Countdown to Derry’s first LinkFest

Some of the city’s brightest young things will take to the stage alongside seasoned musicians this weekend for the first ever LinkFest - a spectacular celebration of home-grown talent featuring over 60 acts.
Music lovers will quite literally be spoilt for choice with so much happening - including an unmissable all-ages gig at Derry’s Playhouse this Saturday night, July 14. So for all those old enough to love music but too young to frequent pubs, this superb all-ages gig will prove the highlight of the festival - and there are still tickets left!
The Playhouse gig begins at 6pm and will see Dead Til Friday headline the bill alongside Making Monsters, Wyldling and Lost Avenue, while in the Playhouse bar and lobby area, Erin Mitchell and Soak will perform. Tickets, priced £7, are on sale now and under 14s must be accompanied by an adult.
For the more mature music fans among you, Bound For Boston on Friday night (July 13) offers performances from the likes of Little Bear, Our Krypton Son, The Wood Burning Savages, Best Boy Grip and Intermission, among others. While Saturday at the same pub sees hugely popular 1980s Derry bands Cuckoo and Bam Bam & The Calling entertaining the masses alongside The Lost and Seneron.
Downstairs at the Gweedore Bar on Friday will be headliners Thumpin’ Jellyfish, John Deery and the Heads, Shine May Sun and Conor Mason, with Saturday night featuring Derry’s Murder Balladeers, The Jepettos, Ronan Kearney and The Jeanette Hutton Band.
Meanwhile, upstairs at The Gweedore Bar on Friday will be headlined by local rock gods, Triggerman, alongside By Any Means, Libido Switch, Zia Regime, Balls Deep and a DJ set from Dave Doherty. Admission to this night of rip-roaring rock is priced £6 and doors open at 9pm.
The Castle Bar will also welcome an array of acts this weekend, with Friday’s line-up including Lochenlode, Appachie and The Reverb upstairs, Acari, Moth and Zero Point Zero among the gems upstairs on Saturday night. While in the Castle Bar itself, much-loved local musicians like Kevin ‘Mug’ Brown, Connor Hutcheon, and Jack Craig on Friday night, and Ryan O’Doherty, Denis McLaughlin, Johanna Fagan and a headline slot from Little Hooks is among those lined up for Saturday night.
Friday night at Masons Bar will see Swanee River headlining, alongside Astralnaut, Rory Harkin and Cradle Rock, while Saturday at the same Magazine Street venue will offer performances from the likes of headliners Mean Red Spiders, Levity Breaks and Mars Field.
The fledgling music festival has been established by Link Music Academy on Castle Street - the city’s newest school for gifted or inspired musicians. Organisers are determined to showcase the staggering amount of talent this city and its hinterland has to offer the world. With 2013 just around the corner, this timely reminder of our own home-grown gems has the potential to become the biggest festival for new music on the island of Ireland!
