Couple’s delight as Linsfort Castle is named in top 100 - once again

An Inishowen bed and breakfast has been named in the Top 100 places to stay in Ireland, for the second year in a row, by the 2012 Bridgestone Guide.
The owners of Linsfort Castle B&B, Buncrana Alan Rooks and Brigeen Clafferty, were over the moon to learn they had been featured in the popular travel book once again.
The pair have been running the famous Inishowen landmark since 2008.
Alan says since they been named in the Bridgestone guide they have had a lot of people coming to their door.
“We have tried to live up to the positive things that John and Sally Mckenna of Bridgestone said about our approach to B&B.
“Up to 2011 our clients were mainly visitors already coming to Inishowen and who found us through our website. However, after getting in the Top 100 we found that quite a number of new customers were actually coming to Linsfort as a destination.
“Many combined their visit with dinner at the award-winning Harry’s Restaurant at Bridgend, and other local establishments such as the Beach House at Buncrana were highly rated by our guests.”
Alan and Bridgeen recommend people to take a tour of the Inishowen 100, taking in Dunree Museum, Mamore Gap, The Waterfall, Doagh Island Famine Village and Five Finger Strand ending at Malin Head at Caffe Bamba, where Dominic Dermott serves was a great range of coffees and snacks.
Alan says, “Thanks to Bridgestone, I think that we have been able to make a useful contribution to the effort to put Inishowen on the tourist map of Ireland”
Linsfort Castle is a country house overlooking Lough Swilly a few miles from Buncrana.
Originally built in 1610 as a Tower house, it was rebuilt in 1720. The house is described in “Classic Irish Houses of the medium size” as “an H plan house of 1720 with an armorial tablet recording its building by Captain Arthur Benson in that year”.
Alan adds, “Our aim is to offer clean and spacious accommodation where you can relax and feel comfortable in this lovely rural coastal setting. The bedrooms are large and most have a panoramic view of the gardens, fields and Lough Swilly.
“There is an old fashioned lounge with an open fire, a large collection of books, table games and quizzes. Open the big front door and you can enjoy the full splendour of the garden and Lough views. Bridgestone’s John Mckenna felt one of Inishowen’s key assets was the incredible light and the atmosphere it creates. There’s no better place to experience this effect than the private terrace at the front of the house.”
In September 2010 Linsfort Castle was featured in UTV ‘s programme” Lesser Spotted Ulster”.
