Culture year will be a “huge success” - minister
The north’s Culture minister says she is confident Derry’s year as City of Culture will be a “huge success.”
Carál Ní Chuilín says 2013 will be an “exciting time for Derry’s development.”
“Planned events will bring huge numbers of visitors and create opportunities for wide ranging and sustainable social benefits across the City and the wider north-west region of Ireland,” she says.
Her comments come after the suspension of the Culture Company’s Director of Marketing, Garbhan Downey.
Mr Downey was suspended last week. Derry City Council have now assumed control of the PR and marketing for 2013.
The Minster says the local authority has responsibility for the City of Culture project.
“Derry City Council, as licence holders for the City of Culture title, is responsible for the delivery of the City of Culture project, and the Council’s Town Clerk and Chief Executive acts as the Project’s Senior Responsible Owner,” she says.
“All contracts relating to the project are entered into by or on behalf of the Council and all funding is administered by the Council.
“I have full confidence that we will ensure the City of Culture is a huge success for Derry and the wider north west of Ireland in 2013 and beyond.”
