Hundreds of adoring schoolgirls received a special Christmas treat this week when teen idol Damian McGinty, star of the hit TV show Glee and US stage phenomenon Celtic Thunder, took to the stage at St Cecilia’s College.
Enjoying a rare visit home, the 20 year-old took time out from his sound-check on Wednesday to talk to his local paper.
“I’m delighted to be home for Christmas,” Damian told the ‘Journal’. “It’s always good to get back and get your feet under the table again, see my mum and get the Christmas home cooking!
So what’s the average Christmas like in the McGinty household?
“Christmas is always fairly quiet for us, to be honest. I’m always away during the year so Christmas is the time that we get the family all together for once and have the big dinner and hang around, and probably have a few drinks that night too. I’m really looking forward to it! “

Astonishingly, the local performer outsold the American teen hit sensation, Justin Bieber on the iTune charts, back in November with his debut EP hitting number 14 in the American Pop charts.
Damian is delighted with how far he has come in life and will take to the Nerve Centre stage this Friday night for a special Christmas gig.
“We have a record label, Walled City Records, and so this is the first of a monthly series that Oran [label co-founder] will be organising throughout the Culture Year 2013 as I’ll probably be away a lot. I suppose it’s a bit of a homecoming thing really, myself, Ben Kelly and a few other local artists who have recently signed to our label. It’ll be lots of local talent every month, with a guitar and people on stage doing acoustic music - basically just a great chance to showcase all the talent in Derry.”
“We’ve had to make more tickets available for the Nerve Centre gig, so people will be able to walk in on the night. I think we’ve shifted a lot of tickets already, so it’s going to be a brilliant night. I can’t wait!”

Before he took to the stage to perform, Damian also had a festive message for all his local fans.
“Thanks for all the support through 2012,” he said. “Yet again, it’s been another mental year! It just never ceases to amaze me, every year it all gets crazier. So here’s to 2013 and making more big things happen!”
Don’t miss Damian McGinty, Ben Kelly and a host of local talent at Derry’s Nerve Centre tonight, December 21, from 8pm. Tickets on sale online or at the door.
