Buncrana woman Mrs Mona Timlin got the surprise of her life on Friday night as she celebrated her 80th birthday with family and friends.

Donegal’s own international singing sensation Daniel O’Donnell phoned from his home in Kincasslagh to wish her many happy returns.

Mrs Timlin’s son Tommy said: “I had contacted Daniel earlier in the week to ask if he would mind contacting mammy and wishing her a happy birthday. The party was in full swing in the Lake of Shadows when I discovered I had left my phone in the car. I went to get it, only to find that Daniel had left mammy a voicemail. She was chuffed to pieces.”

But it did not end there.

“Daniel rang again while we were watching a wee slide show, which we had put together celebrating Mammy’s life. We did not hear it with all of the hullaballoo in the hotel. However, when the band was setting up, Daniel’s phone rang for a third time and he and mammy chatted away for five minutes. She was thrilled.”

Mr Timlin said the whole family was delighted Daniel had taken the time to contact his mother.

He said: “This is the type of gesture which Daniel carries out for many people. It is what makes him unique!”

Mrs Timlin (née Doherty) is a long-standing Daniel fan. She last met him in the summer at the opening of the new garden at the Buncrana nursing unit.

“I will not forget Friday night in a hurry,” she said. “Daniel is a lovely person with a great way about him.”
