Derry’s Centre for Contemporary Art (CCA) is delighted to announce that internationally renowned contemporary art figure, Professor Declan McGonagle, will be taking on the role of Special Adviser to the Board of Directors.

Primarily funded by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, CCA’s mission is to give emerging artists and new curators the best possible tools for developing internationally successful careers in contemporary art, and to offer audiences access to the most relevant and engaging art practices of our times. The venue grew out of the Context Gallery, which was founded by Hugh Mullholland in 1992.

CCA fosters a wide range of artistic, curatorial, and critical practices through five collaborative and process-driven streams: research and production, exhibition-making, public programmes, publishing, and residencies. Embedded in the Cathedral Quarter within the historic city walls, CCA connects the region with itself and the rest of the world, especially during the UK City of Culture 2013.

Professor McGonagle said: “I am very pleased to have been invited to support CCA and its ambitious vision for the future which will complement other organisations in the city and the region, in a very exciting period. I look forward to working with the staff and the Board and to making an input to strategic planning to help realise that vision.”

Drawing from his distinguished career as the first organiser of Derry’s legendary Orchard Gallery, the founding Director of IMMA, and current leadership of Dublin’s National College of Art and Design, he will support the CCA by representing our interests locally and abroad, support the development of links with key partners and potential funders, and lend his wealth of experience to the development of CCA. His input will help us consolidate our achievements to date and further build the national and international standing of the venue.

Derry City’s Town Clerk, Sharon O’Connor, said: “I am delighted to hear of Professor McGonagle’s continued involvement in the City, he brings an additional international perspective to the vibrant and growing contemporary arts scene in Derry.”
