With a hectic summer ahead, including a slot at Japan’s Fuji Rock Festival and a tour of Australia, Derry man Vincent Neff and his art-pop band Django Django are living the dream. JULIEANN CAMPBELL caught up with the mild-mannered frontman to talk about their debut Derry show and their ambitions for the future.

Originally from Templegrove in the city, Vincent Neff put aside his career as an architect to pursue his musical ambitions - and it’s a decision he’ll never regret.

“It’s pretty different from architecture anyway,” the 33 year-old says of Django Django.

“We used to have our nine to five jobs and played when we could in the evenings but we’ve all been making music for years and so we just decided the time was right to give it a good go. I was actually still working in architecture until November past, but we got so busy I had to knock it on the head for now.”

The band released their self-titled album in January of this year to widespread acclaim. Two weeks ago, they performed on BBC’s ‘Later... with Jools Holland’ among some of the industry’s finest, including Welsh legend Tom Jones and Plan B.

Vincent says, “It was a pretty mad experience, surreal and scary! Especially when the band before finishes and all those cameras swing towards you and you realise ‘we’re on!’ and that there’s no room for error! But we did OK and it was brilliant. Tom Jones was there and we got our picture taken with him too.

“It’s just been a great buzz. We enjoy doing interesting, weird shows, something different, to keep things fresh. We’ve done a lot of travelling since the album came out, and we’re just back from Brussels and now we’re heading to France, so we’re definitely kept busy.

“The album’s going really well and with summer and all the festivals coming up, we expect to be playing nearly every night at times. We’ll be playing Fuji Rock in Japan this summer, and then will go on to Australia for festivals and a tour there too.”

Vincent also revealed that a US album deal could be on the cards.

“We’re going through a couple of options and there are three or four labels we could go for there, so we’ll see what happens,” he says.

Django Django will bring their memorable live show to a venue near you next month when they play An Culturlann on Great James’ Street on Thursday, June 21.

“We’re all really looking forward to playing An Culturlann - it’s an unusual venue and so it should be great,” Vincent adds.

“We’ve wanted to play Derry for ages but had to wait until we had built enough momentum and the time was right. It’s going to be really good fun!”
