Derry has ‘Fifty Shades’ fever

It’s the controversial book that everyone is talking about - and it seems Derry just can’t get enough of the racy ‘Fifty Shades’ trilogy.

Booksellers in the city are reporting it “almost impossible” to keep the titles, penned by English author and mum of two EL James, on the shelves with both Eason and Shipquay Books and News both currently out of stock of the first of the trilogy - ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ - and their suppliers are waiting on the publishers to reprint the titles.

A spokesperson for Shipquay Books and News said they had not witnessed such demand for a book since the the heyday of the Harry Potter releases.

“It has been very strange,” the spokesperson said. “The books sat on the shelves for weeks and then people seemed to start talking about them - now they sell out as soon as they hit the shelves.”

The Fifty Shades trilogy tells the story of the love affair between college graduate Anastasia Steele and the dark and brooding billionaire businessman Christian Grey. It’s not for the faint hearted - examining very adult themes and containing scenes of a graphic sexual nature.

The first book in the series has become the fastest selling paperback of all time.

Both Eason and Shipquay Books and News said that getting a hold of the book from the suppliers is now proving difficult as the book has gone to another reprint.

“We’re not sure when we will be getting more copies in - it’s up to the publishers now, but it has exceeded all our expectations.”
