The parents of the late Donovan McKeever have spoken of their pride and joy that his artwork will be exhibited and sold to raise funds for the NI Childrens’ Hospice.

The art collection will feature in a special commemorative exhibit at The Shipquay Gallery from mid-October.

Twenty year old Donovan passed away in December 2006. Before his muscle wasting disease, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy took hold, Donovan was an avid and talented painter and illustrator.

Donovan’s father Brendan said: “We volunteer a number of hours every week at the Childrens’ Hospice shop in the city centre and some of the artwork is already on display there. It is a such a good cause and they were so good to us when Donovan was alive, so we are delighted to have helped and are so proud Donovan’s work will be going on display for such a good cause.

“Parents are not supposed to bury their children, but they do. Often all that is left are memories, or the ways in which those who have died, influenced lives.

“We remember Donovan every day and this exhibition gives us an opportunity once again to acknowledge Donovan’s ability, to let others share this with us.

“On this occasion we will remember Donovan through his art. The exhibition also gives us all the chance to thank in a very small way the staff at NI Children’s Hospice.

“They do excellent work with children and young people with life threatening conditions.

“Donovan would have liked that.”

Over thirty pieces of Donovan’s work will be on display, for viewing and purchasing, at Shipquay Gallery from October 15 - 20.
