Elvis Costello to play City of Culture gig

An Elvis Costello gig and a project depicting the historical, cultural, personal and community stories of the city have been added to the City of Culture line up.

The north’s culture minister Carál Ní Chuilín has just announced details of the latest additions to the programme that had its official launch earlier today.

BT Portrait of a City, a film and oral history project, will work with community groups, schools and libraries to collect the stories and photographs throughout 2013.

Costello will play at Ebrington ion June 27.

Carál Ní Chuilín said: “As the countdown to this spectacular year of events continues, there is plenty to look forward to not least the BT Portrait of a City which will give local people the chance to contribute and create their own city portrait. Tonight we get a flavour of what is to come over the next 12 months through the illuminations on the City Hotel and the Peace Bridge.

“News that Elvis Costello is to play Derry is just one highlight of how music is to change the city. This international musician is coming here in June – and not long after that we anticipate over 300,000 people will play music across the city. Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, the biggest festival of Irish culture anywhere in the world will come to Derry. This will be an event of truly historical significance with the Fleadh taking place north of the border for the first time. The pavements will throb with Irish music and culture.

“2013 will be an amazing year of opportunity for the city of Derry and this part of the island as the eyes of the world look to its city of culture offering. We are on a journey which offers the city a year of opportunity – a year when we must work together to maximise the sustainable economic dividends available through cultural tourism and ensure that all sections of the community, but especially people living in disadvantaged and excluded, areas are progressively included and enriched.

“Culture and arts have a huge role to play in empowering citizens, in tackling the long-term structural inequalities and in helping build a sustainable economic development model for the future.”

Paying tribute to the commitment and dedication of the people behind City of Culture, Carál Ní Chuilín said: “Many people have worked hard to get us to where we are today and I know that will hard work will continue. I wish this city and local people every success with the year ahead.

“I have no doubt that this will be an unbelievable year for Derry. To be here on the day the programme is revealed, in the week when the Lonely Planet gave the city such a major vote of confidence is something very special. This endorsement and a year of top quality events can only add to Derry’s reputation as a modern, vibrant city steeped in history and culture.”
