Full house for launch of ‘Witness’ book
A new book exploring the groundbreaking Theatre of Witness project was launched to a full house on Sunday afternoon at Derry’s Playhouse.
Teya Sepinuck, founder of the Theatre of Witness, is author of the new book entitled ‘Theatre of Witness – Finding the Medicine in Stories of Suffering, Transformation and Peace’.
Over 80 people attended its launch on Sunday, where Playhouse founder Pauline Ross and Maureen Hetherington from Towards Understanding and Healing both spoke, as well as the author herself. Renowned local harpist Tracy McRory played the harp beautifully for all in attendance.
The book, published by Jessica Kingsley Press chronicles the author’s 26 years of creating and producing theatre with people whose stories have previously gone untold, including prisoners and their families, refugees, survivors and former perpetrators of domestic abuse, ex-combatants and those who have lived through war. The concluding two chapters focus on Teya’s Theatre of Witness work in Northern Ireland, including the creation and tour of ‘We Carried Your Secrets’, and ‘I Once Knew a Girl’ at The Playhouse.
Author Teya Sepinuck hailed the launch a great success. “I was overwhelmed by the support and deep listening of the audience, which just shows the beauty and import of storytelling in our times. People want to connect to deep and meaningful stories, as well as share them with each other,” Ms Sepinuck said.
The launch quickly follows The Theatre of Witness project’s prestigious performance at a groundbreaking European Peace conference in Brussels, where the visionary project was held up as an example of best practice for conflict and post conflict countries throughout the world.
With an engaging and heartfelt narrative, the book now beautifully conveys the key principles of Theatre of Witness and explores the author’s own journey that lead to the conception and growth of this unique model of performance.
