Nobel prizewinning poet Seamus Heaney and internationally acclaimed piper Liam O’Flynn have been added to the bill for the Fleadh Cheoil na h’Éireann which will be held in Derry in August.

Their critically acclaimed show. ‘The Poet and the Piper’ will involve the poet reading his work to the sound of the uilleann pipes and was designed to echo WB Yeats’ famous St Patrick’s Day poetry reading in 1934.

The duo will join a world class line-up of musicians who will be performing in Derry during the Fleadh including Cara Dillon and the Orchestra of Ireland, Dervish, Flook, Beoga, Tim Edey, Brendan Power, Liz Carroll, Tim Eriksen, The Campbells, Lorcán Mac Mathuna, and dance troupe, Take the Floor.

Th St Columb’s College educated poet and master piper will perform in Derry’s Millennium Forum on August 14th, two days ahead of Dungiven singer Cara Dillon’s performance with the Orchestra of Ireland at the same venue.

The newly refurbished Guildhall will be the centrepiece for a series of lunchtime concerts celebrating the richest traditional musical regions in the world. These events will feature the distinctive musical flavours of Nova Scotia and America with performances by the Troy McGillivray Trio, Liz Carroll and Tim Eriksen; the best of Irish music with the Meitheal Orchestra; and the Highlands and Islands of Scotland with The Campbells, “Brave” piper Lorne Mac Doughall, Finlay Wells, and Rona Wilkie and Marit Fält.

Fleadh 2013 chairperson, Eibhlín Ní Dhochartaigh said this was a once in a lifetime chance to see some amazing performers “The Fleadh in Derry this year is a first and has been described many times as historic and groundbreaking. We have worked very hard to bring together artists that reflect that and we hope that with the eyes of the world on Derry this year we can celebrate the very best of Irish culture.”

Often described as the “Olympics of traditional music,” the Fleadh features competitions in traditional music, concerts and events. It attracts more than 300,000 people each year and 2013 will be the first time the Fleadh Cheoil will have been held in the North in its 60 year history.
