‘I hope Derry likes my new song’: Coulter
Derry songwriting legend Phil Coulter insists a new song he has written to celebrate the city’s culture year is not “The Town I Loved So Well: Part Two”.
Phil says his new commission will be premiered at the ‘Sons and Daughters’ gig in Derry on January 12 next.
Phil says his new song takes its title from the final verse of ‘The Town I Loved So Well’ - his famous anthem for his home town.
He explained: “The last line of ‘The Town I Loved So Well’ says, ‘I can only pray for a bright brand new day’. The title of the new song springs from that closing stanza. It is going to be called ‘Bright, Brand New Day’.
“We’ve been famous for all the wrong reasons for a long time but I think next year we are really going to shine,” he added.
However, the singer-songwriter insists the new song is not “The Town I Loved So Well: Part 2.”
“The two cannot be compared,” he says. “I wrote that song forty years ago when Derry was a very different place.
“We’re in a new and exciting chapter in the history of our city and the song reflects that. It’s much more positive and celebratory. I hope Derry folk like it!”
