Joy as dozens of Culture projects get green light

Forty-five local artists received fantastic news from this week - when Culture Company informed them that proposals for 2013 projects had been approved and awarded grant funding of over £250,000.

The 45 different projects arose from proposals received in response to Culture Company’s Individual Artists’ programme, with selected artists informed of their successful applications in recent days and given grants ranging from £1,500 to £15,000 each.

The Individual Artists’ Award was created in response to consultations with the city’s individual artists. The Award aims to provide artistic development opportunities for individual practitioners based in Northern Ireland to create artworks in response to Derry’s designation as

UK City of Culture 2013. Applicants were invited to put forward ideas for new work based on the themes of 2013 including Joyous Celebration,

Purposeful Inquiry and Telling a New Story. The programme has generated overwhelming interest amongst the artistic community since it was announced in August.

The grants have now been offered to artists for a wide variety of projects across a range of disciplines including sculpture, visual arts, music, film, photography, printing, quilting and dance.

Individual projects to receive funding under the Individual Artists’ Award include a new music composition honouring the WW1 veterans from the city, a glass installation exploring the history of the shirt factories and a 3D digital printing project.

Martin Melarkey, Senior Programmer with Culture Company, said: “The successful artists all put forward impressive and thoughtful proposals detailing how to interpret the themes of 2013 through a wide range of differing art forms.

“The Individual Artists’ Award has enabled Culture Company to support new works of art which explore the themes of 2013 in imaginative ways.

“We were extremely impressed by the innovative and exciting artistic responses to the key themes of the year.”

The Individual Artists’ Award has been financed by funds committed by DCAL.
