OUR NEW CULTURAL ICON... Keith Harkins debut album soared to No1 on the World Billboard Chart last year.

Derry musician Keith Harkin, who is currently taking the USA by storm, has been voted Derry’s greatest Cultural Icon.

Details are to be officially announced by Culture Company tomorrow, but it seems that the Derry-born singer has scooped the top slot by thousands of votes in a public competition to find the city’s greatest icon.

The singing surfer was up against some fierce competition too - Derry’s Nobel prize-winner John Hume, who was himself voted Greatest Ever Irish

Person some years back, Touched by an Angel actress Roma Downey and local sporting heroes Jimmy and Billy Spider Kelly. He was also up against his fellow Celtic Thunder co-star, local musician and ‘Glee’ star, Damien McGinty! Those voting in the contest were in with a chance of winning a fantastic Golden Ticket allowing them exclusive access to City of Culture 2013’s top events - and the winner of that grand prize is also to be announced tomorrow.

Now living in Los Angeles, Keith Harkin was born in Derry and brought up in Quigley’s Point. He released his self-titled debut album to great acclaim in 2012.
