Nicola lines up the victories
Derry linedancer, Nicola Marshall, has just been crowned World Dance Masters World Champion. The 18 year old adds the World Title to the European Championship title she won earlier this year.
The world title in the age category 16-24 year age group came in the Blackpool Winter Garden World Championships, the European title in Manchester. Nicola also finished third in the Pro-am couples dance off. Finishing third in the World with partner, Fred Whitehouse.
The victories were all the sweeter considering last year’s Championships, Nicola narrowly missed out on the final of that competition. The North West Institute student finished eighth, with the top seven qualifying for the final.
Nicola told the ‘Journal:’ “I’m delighted, absolutely delighted with it all. I narrowly missed out on the final in Manchester last year. It was disappointing to just miss out on the top seven places and a final slot. It did however give me the drive to work harder for this year.”
Nicola , who loves linedancing says she fell in love with the; “music hair tan and make up seven years ago ans signed up immediately.”
“People think it is an old fuddy duddy past-time but it is all very modern, more funky. The costumes are very ornate it isn’t all hats and cowboy boots.”
Even though Nicola practices every day ahead of major competions, she was still unaware of how she was scoring at the three day competition until the last day of the World Championships.
“I was just delighted to find out I had won,” said the five time All Ireland winner.
“All credit must go to Sandra Long my teacher at the YMCA. She has been fantastic to me and I couldn’t have done it without her.”
Though she hopes to compete for another few years, Nicola’s long term ambition is to open a line dancing school to teach children the dances she loves so much.
