Noeleen has a design for the future
Eglinton’s Noeleen Logue was the toast of the London design community last week as she scooped two gongs at the New Designers exhibition, London.
In collecting both The New Designers Goldsmiths’ Company Award for Silversmithing and ‘Design in Silver’ from the Contemporary British Silversmiths awards, the National College of Ireland, Dublin student announced her graduation in style.
The first award came on Wednesday last, followed by the design in silver award on Thursday.
A group of Noeleen’s classmates also made the trip but she was the only Irish student to return with an award.
Noeleen told The Journal: “When my name was called out at the award ceremony I didn’t have any idea I’d won. It was a complete surprise to be honest and straight away we were rushed off to talk to the press and meet the dignataries and into the VIP area. It was a brilliant experience.
“My tutors are over the moon as are my classmates, we loved it. There were a few commissions for my classmates too. In London it is a different ball game to Dublin. I knew it was such a big event and hopefully there is still loads to come from it.
“I made plenty of contacts so lets see where it takes us now.”
Noeleen won the awards for a series of bowls she crafted entitled: ‘It’s what’s inside that counts.’
Explaining the creative process she said: “The design came to me over the course of fourth year. I was really interested in the process of making the bowls. They are hand raised bowls with guilding metal and nickle silver. Each form is constructed of several layers thereby creating the illusion of being thicker walled. By extracting sections, it reveals unexpected interior compositions.”
The awards are Noeleen’s second and third this year, she already collected the Craft Council of Ireland Future Makers Material Support award in May.
Asked about her hat-trick of gongs, Noeleen quipped: “It’s not going too bad, to be honest.”
Having studied Foundation Art and Design at Limavady campus of NWRC and at Limavady Grammar before that, the now 22 year old moved to NCI, Dublin three years ago and has just graduated with a B/Des Craft design in metals.
Looking to the future Noeleen added: “I’m hoping to set up my own studio and keep making pieces and building up my skillset. I want to keep exhibiting and selling. I’m not sure if it will be here or in England I’ll have to follow the opportunity to be honest.”
