Successful Scór finals held in Derry on Saturday

The finals of the Ulster Scór na nÓg competition were held in St Cecilia’s College, Derry on Saturday night as part of the GAA’s contribution to the City of Culture celebrations.

It was the first time the finals of the competition were held in the city and attracted a large crowd, with competitors for eight of the nine counties of Ulster who took part in eight categories – solo singing, céilí dancing, set dancing, quiz, solo singing, instrumental group, recitation and drama.

Aogan O Fearghaill, president of the GAA in Ulster, welcomed Liam O Laochda and Siobhan Ni Chuana from the National Scór Committee to the event at St Cecilia’s along with the 700 guests.

“It is very fitting that Ulster should hold its finals in Derry city, a city steeped in Irish culture, in its year of special celebrations as City Of Culture in 2013.

Ulster GAA is fully supportive of the ambition and capability of Derry GAA to hold so many of the key GAA events in the city in 2013,” Mr O Fearghaill said.

The winners will no go forward to represent their club, county and province at the All Ireland Scór na nÓg finals.

Winners on the night were; Rince Foirne (céilí dancing), An Chrois Bhán (Whitecross); Amhránaíocht Aonair (solo singing), Emily Shields, An Mullach Bán, Ard Mhacha; Ceol Uirlise (instrumental music), Droim Shamhain, Muineachán; Aitriseoireacht/Scéalaíocht (recitation/story telling), Colm Kirke, Cluain Eois, Muineachán; Bailéad Ghrúpa (ballad group), Gaoth Dobhair, Dún na nGall, Nuachleas (novelty act), Coileach Eanach, Ard Mhacha; Rince Seit (Sett Dancing), Crois ar Loch, an Cabhán; Tráth na gCeisteanna (quiz), An Ghleann, an Dún.
