A talented young student from Derry has designs on winning a major UK wide fashion award.

20 year old Oliver Doherty, who is completing a HND in Design (Textiles) at the North West Regional College’s Strand Road Campus, has been shortlisted as one of the final five in the Alfa Romeo Young Designer Award, at the 20th annual St Andrews Charity Fashion Show in Edinburgh on 25th February.

Oliver, who is the only Northern Ireland student in the top five, has had his stunning collection of beautifully crafted hand-woven clothing photographed in picturesque settings on the outskirts of St Andrews.

In the next week he will present his creations to a panel of fashion experts, before getting the chance to show off his designs on the catwalk of the UK’s largest student-run fashion show.

He has also been continuing with his studies while creating his collection.

The winner will not only be crowned the 2012 Alfa Romeo Young Designer but will also receive £1,000 in prize money and funding to produce an item of clothing for chosen charity The Muir Maxwell Trust, which offers support to children with severe epilepsy.

The public will also play an important part in deciding who should win the prestigious award – with visitors to www.facebook.com/alfaromeouk being able to vote for their favourite finalists’ designs.

Oliver is appealing for local people to support him online, and at present his designs have him leading the public vote.

Even before this latest accolade the NWRC student has been making a name for himself in the Fashion world.

Oliver, who is from Inishowen, first studied at North West Regional College on the Foundation Diploma in Art & Design, before progressing to the two year Higher National Diploma course.

He now has to impress the panel of judges for the Alfa Romeo Young Designer Award, which last year included Alex Evans of Britain’s Next Top Model, and PPQ designer Amy Molyneaux.

The winner’s designs will be seen at an award ceremony in Edinburgh on 24 February followed by the St Andrews Charity Fashion Show 2012 on 25 February. Visit NWRC’s facebook page for more on how to vote for Oliver: www.facebook.com/mynwrc
