Teacher training aims to bring arts to deaf children

Eight arts-based teachers in Derry have undergone specialist training to make the creative arts more accesible to deaf children.

The training, organised by the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS), comes after the campign group found many deaf children are missing out on opportunites to experience the arts because of a lack of specialist services,

NDCS say many arts providers don’t know how to make their services and activites avaialble to kids with hearing difficluties.

Hayley Jarvis, NDCS Inclusive Activities Manager, says involving deaf children in any form of creative arts can help them feel more confident, learn a new skill and explore the world around them.

“By following simple steps like using hand gestures or visual aids, arts teachers and facilitators can include a deaf child in their activities.”

The eight Derry based teachers completed the training in July.

Funded by the Arts Council in Northern Ireland, the training is part of the NDCS’s Me2 programme, which works with arts and leisure organisations across the UK to make them accessible to deaf children and young people.
